What is Seeds

Seeds is the student-run literary and arts magazine at A. W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts.

What is a literary and arts magazine?

A literary and arts magazine is a magazine dedicated to publishing literature and different types of art. In Seeds, we aim to publish student works of all different genres to showcase the diversity of Dreyfoos.

What is commonly published in Seeds

Seeds publishes prose, poetry, creative nonfiction, visual and digital art, photography, choreography, films, monologues, set design, and any other form of original art that our students submit.

What are the different sections?

We have five sections: business, submissions, multimedia, design, and management.

Our business section sets up fundraisers and restaurant nights to raise money to print the book and fund our website.

The submissions section grades submitted pieces and chooses the ones that go into the book. They edit the accepted art pieces and plan events.

Multimedia works on our online presence, which involves our website and social media. Multimedia also produces two online magazines every year along with showcasing what we do within Seeds.

Design puts the accepted art pieces into different spreads that make up the book and also designs our merchandise.

Our management section includes our adviser, editor-in-chief, and managing editors. They keep the publication running and oversee everything that goes on in each section.

How is the print magazine made?

Pieces are selected from Dreyfoos students, edited by our submissions staff, then organized by design, and placed in the physical copy of the book.

What are online magazines?

We release winter and spring editions of our book that we post on our website. The pieces go through the same submission process as our print magazine and are given to the website staff after. The pieces are uploaded in pages, rather than spreads, because of the way the website flows. Multimedia designs the entire website based on the online magazine. For example, with our online mag “undefined.” the cover’s grayscale photography added more sharp elements and a neutral style for the website.

What is a spread?

A spread is the two pages laid out when you open a book. Our design section works hard to make these pages unique for each artwork that we place in the book. The designs on each spread are created for the purpose of complimenting the pieces while also making the entire book design cohesive.
