A Man’s Journey

Sophia Milcheva '26

In this poignant diptych, the dichotomy between the elderly figure's determined stride along the sidewalk and the expansive dark teal body of water behind him unfolds a narrative of life's journey. The elderly man, a testament to the passage of time, moves forward with resilience, embodying the strength gained through experience. The contrasting dark, teal water symbolizes the unknown, suggesting the vast depths of life's uncertainties that lie ahead. Through this composition, I seek to explore themes of resilience, the passage of time, and the ever-present mystery of the future. It prompts viewers to reflect on their own life trajectories, acknowledging both the familiar path behind and the enigmatic expanse that awaits on the horizon.

It is so dreamlike— the cracked tree, the wooden desk, the

sea.

As though the human brain were melting back to its true form,

becoming the ocean and the cliffs,

watching the shore as it drifts away, watching how it once was

—confined to small geometric blocks and ticking clocks

that now, in this greater vision of the world, are nothing more than melting dough baking in the sand.

The Persistence of Memory

This is about the painting by Salvador Dali. It was the first painting I remember seeing and thinking about.
