Skeletons in the closet

Anna Miller — Sophomore

I made this piece in hopes of communicating the idea of embracing individuality and differences. I think a big problem within society is the need to feel included, and the desire to hide what makes you stand out. The phrase 'skeletons in the closet' represents people shoving their differentiation into a metaphorical 'closet', in order to feel valid. I think most people can resonate with this feeling of having to hide something, or pretending to be something they’re not in order to fit into what is “normal”. I wanted this piece to counteract that mindset and normalize originality. The skeleton figure in the piece is all cleaned up, well dressed and proper. It shows how you have to let your skeletons out of the closet to be the truest version of yourself.
