The Magician — Cora Gancarz ‘22
I created a reduction print of my personal rendition of the “Temperance” tarot card. I first carved out and printed on the red-inked sections. Then, I carved out more details. I did this with yellow ink which made an orange tone with the previous red ink.
sky feline
in a crowded airplane over the Atlantic,
a woman in the aisle seat next to me holds an animal carrier in her lap.
purple letters embroidered in the nylon strap spell “emotional support animal”
the woman seems to be sleeping, softly snoring through her polypropylene mask
through the dark mesh cover, the green eyes of a cat gleam back at me
her gray whiskers faintly glow with lunar moonlight that floods through the right side window
the cat meows,
the woman slips her finger through a hole in the mesh.
and they touch,
paw to finger, and stay there
cat and woman speak a language of their own
with love songs and faint lullabies,
subdued conversations with no words
cat keeps woman calm, woman keeps cat safe,
32,000 feet over the sea,
we are alone, cat, woman,
and me

This piece was inspired by the tranquility of cats and the comfort that they bring to everyone.
