Cover Artist Chloe Tovar
What other mediums of art have you tried besides photography?
I went to Bak Middle School (of the Arts), and I was a visual arts major. I experimented with painting and other art mediums that are more visual art-like. I also took a photography class in middle school, and that's where I learned that I like photography best, but I have experimented with things like painting and sculpture and ceramics.
What made photography stand out?
I tried (photography) my eighth grade year middle school, and I worked with Photoshop. I worked with a lot of design and graphic design, and it really interested me. I liked things like fashion, and I realized that through photography and graphic design, I could incorporate it. I liked having my focal points in photography and drawing (on) people, but I couldn't draw people that well. Photography was a good way of exploring that rather than drawing.
How do you think your background in visual arts has helped you to become a better photographer?
It honestly helps a lot. Even here in digital media (at) Dreyfoos, everyone's required to have a sketchbook and draw. Sketching your photographs is really important.
Who do you admire in the art world?
I really like Tim Walker. He makes lots of fashion design photographs, and he makes some look really unique and almost crazy looking with fun colors. He also plays a lot with black and white (while) still making it fun, and this piece especially embodies that, (like with) his black and white pieces with high contrast.

What is your favorite part of the artistic process?
I like planning things out. Lots of people would say their favorite part is actually doing it, (but) I like planning and editing. You can make one photo look really different and mean different things just based on how you edit it.
How would you describe your art style? When was the moment where you discovered that style?
These past two years I've been focused on experimenting until I find a style that clicks. I haven't really found one yet.
What do you want to be your legacy?
I want to experiment this year because I want to go to college for art. That's when I can focus on a specific style. Here at Dreyfoos, I'm focused on learning and expanding as much as I can with all the resources that we (are) given.
What inspired you to take this photograph?
I was in New York City, and I was taking street photography. I hadn't really gotten a chance to do that here in Florida because there are not really that many cities. When I was in New York City in Central Park, I was like, ‘I gotta take pictures of everyone.’ I think this lady that I took a picture of saw (that) I was taking pictures, and she decided to do what she's doing in the picture: (embracing the air). I was like, ‘It's perfect,’ as soon as I saw it, so (I took the photo).
